Let's benefit from China Chemicals

Molecular formula:

White flakes crystal

CAS number:

Boiling point:

260 °C

Melting point:

94 °C

Specific gravity:

Steam pressure is very high when melting, very toxic; it is prone to generate dimer and trimer, along with vapouring phenomena to some extent.

Molecular Structure:

Although p-PHENYL DIISOCYANATE (PPDI) was first synthesized by F.L.PYMAN as early as 1913, it was recognized gradually by PU industry until 1950s’, however it was only really acknowledged and utilized by 1980s’, when many kinds of elastomers had been produced on the basis of PPDI.
Besides benzene ring, there are still two symmetrical –NCO groups in its molecular; when react with diol or diamine to produce PU polymer, it can bring forth compactive hard segment into the polymer molecular, which has very high cohesion force and makes PU polymer has very good phase separation; as a result, PU polymer derived from PPDI has the following advantages over traditional PU:
Better abrasion resistance, better mechanical properties, better thermal resistance, solvent resistance, water resistance and extraordinary resilience.
So even though the price of PPDI is very expensive at present, it is still a very important isocyanate for preparing high quality casting type and thermal-plastic PU polymers.

Production Method:  take para-phenylene diamine as the basic raw material, two-step phosgene reaction is adopted in solvent to produce PPDI, then get rid of solvent and hydrogen chloride generated in the reaction by distillation, thus high purity PPDI can be achieved.
